Friendships through Life

Today is the birthday of one of my childhood besties.  I haven’t talked to her in years, but once in a while I think about our friendship and what value it brought to my life.

I can still remember the many sleepovers, scary movies, dance routines, snow tunnels, and bike riding, walking to school, becoming ‘blood’ sisters and holding hands.

Yep, we held hands on our way to/from school each day for as long as I can remember.  Awwww!!! Precious memories.

I’m sure I spent more time at her house than I did at my own throughout those years of childhood.  It was one of my favorite times in life – we played together, got in trouble together and were actually more like sisters than just friends.

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

Unfortunately, we both moved away when we were 12 -years-old – my family to Tennessee and her family to Dallas. The lives we led from that day forward were completely different from one another and our relationship basically ended at that time.

Not all friendships last forever and some were just not meant to be.  And some are great for the memories.  Sigh….

However, this doesn’t mean that we don’t have the opportunity to learn from each person that crosses our path throughout our lives.  Additionally, we can take strides to strengthen and grow the friendships we currently have.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

I wouldn’t change a thing about my long ago friend.  She made my childhood special, fun, and all-together wonderful!  I am so blessed to have had her in my life!!

What if we worked on our relationship with God like we do our dear friends?

  1. We would spend more time with Him.

  2. We would get to know Him better.

  3. We would talk to Him about everything.

That’s what friends do!  They make a conscious effort to maintain and develop their bond.  And Jesus wants to be our friend!  How cool is that?!?!?!

No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:15

I can’t think of a better friend!

There is nothing wrong with friendships that end because they each have and/or had a purpose in our lives.

The ones we need to be working on are the ones that teach us to be better people, better servants and better Christians.

Are you a friend of Jesus?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 13:20 – Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
