Who Is in Your Community?

One of the questions I ask my clients on a regular basis is, “How would you describe your community?”

This may sound like a strange question, but we learn much about a person by the friends they surround themselves with.

The description of their tribe gives me an opportunity to evaluate their needs and provides input that helps me to understand whether they have support and encouragement or negativity and pessimism to content with while they are committed to making positive life changes.

It can be incredibly difficult for someone if they don’t have a supportive community because they may feel isolated, judged, or tempted to revert to old habits. However, if they were part of a positive group of friends, things would be different.

Regardless of whether we are wanting to grow our business or grow our faith in God…who we surround ourselves with MATTERS!

See, if we associate with like-minded people moving toward similar goals, we will have a much better chance to reach our own goals.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

God made us to be in relationship with Him and others. Yet, we must beware of who we choose to be in relationships with.

Our tribe is just that…ours. We decide who we let into our “circle of trust” and we are in control of the boundaries we put in place.

Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare. Proverbs 22:24-25

This Proverb shows just how detrimental it is if we hang with people who are not on the up and up!! It illustrates how we will either lower or rise to the characters of those we associate with.

Obviously, there are some people that we will have to be around occasionally even if they are not the people we would choose. However, those times are best few and far between and those certain individuals do not have to be those we seek wisdom, advice, information, assistance or instruction.

On the flip side, a good tribe is; uplifting, helpful, loving, kind, optimistic, positive, and growth orientated. The people within learn from the past, make positive changes in the now and move towards a better future. They have a growth mindset that allows them to thrive even through challenges.

The best part is that we get to CHOOSE our friends! Let’s do our best to have friends who point us towards God and for us to do the same for others!!

Some Wisdom for Today: Proverbs 27:17 – Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
