Taking Action

We all go through life wanting to change something.  Maybe it’s a job, an attitude, a physical attribute or that hideous color painted in your bathroom.  Regardless of the situation, nothing will change unless we take action.

Honestly, we can complain or discuss the problem at length, but if we never take the first step to transform our career, house or ourselves then we will still be whining a year from now about the same things.  Ah…come on!!!

I think the reason most of us stay in our ruts is because we fear the ‘change’ won’t be all we have built it up to be and the ‘action’ will have been for naught.

For example, if you have a bland kitchen color on the wall and you paint it red…it might take you five different shades of red until you get the one you like.  AND THEN, two years later, you just might paint the kitchen the color it was BEFORE the red!  Argh!!!  TRUE STORY…sigh.

The one thing I can say for all that painting I did is that I am now a professional painter (or at least I should be)!!!

Sure, the kitchen painting turned out to be for nothing because my tastes changed, but that’s ok.  I certainly know that I don’t like barn door red as a kitchen color and I definitely would not have known that before the painting extravaganza!

Taking action is ALL OVER God’s Word! In fact, I’m getting a clear picture that God doesn’t want us to sit back and watch life pass us by or let someone else do all the work! We must get off our fannies and be the hands, feet, mouth and heart of Christ…every day.

  1. What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:14-17

  2. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. James 1:23-25

  3. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2Peter 1:5-8

  4. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24

  5. Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1John 3:18

I truly love the first verse I used from the book of James because I can SO relate.  How many times do I talk the big talk about helping others, but then DO NOTHING.  Like talking about helping the homeless is actually HELPING!!!  NOT.

I fail on all accounts!!!  Of course, the last verse I used from 1John makes me cringe the most because it has MEG written all over it and I feel like someone is looking directly at me when it’s being said.  Nice.

Basically, all of these scriptures are good reminders that talk is cheap and deeds are where living the ‘good life’ is at!!!  We can all stand to do a little more for someone else and to make a change in our own attitudes and behaviors.

So, don’t just talk today…do something good today!

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 6:6-8 – Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.
