With all my lip service about moving on, making commitments and choosing to follow Jesus, I’ve been burdened with the question, “What do I do RIGHT NOW?”
Sounds like an easy question, but for some reason, we tend to make it really difficult.
Instead of simply trying to ‘do better’ today, we get stuck in the details of theology, judgment and all of the questions we just don’t have answers to. We bog ourselves down with the bigger picture and the destination and don’t pay enough attention to the day staring at us in the face.
I have a real problem with this.
I find myself on many occasions feeling like I have to have my master plan set in stone before I can take the first step towards accomplishing a goal. In fact, I will start the laundry, wash the dishes and tell myself I need to clean out the closets before I can sit down and work on the objective of the day.
I advise myself that if I begin working on my PURPOSE, then I won’t live up to my daily obligations of wife, mother and homemaker. I convince myself that I can’t do both, so I either have to pick one or try to do both and let something slip. Therefore, many times I DO NOTHING.
Yes, the dishes get done and the boo-boos get smooched, but I’m left with a lot of time wringing my hands and beating myself up because I’m not actually ACCOMPLISHING anything. And I’m not because I’m too busy worrying over what to do! GRRRR….
Life is not an all or nothing equation. It’s a lot of baby steps that make up the whole, but the key is to take the first step.
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34
Yes, we need to make goals and objectives. However, if we aren’t making some efforts at this moment, we will never end up anywhere except in the same spot we are today.
The “doing” also doesn’t have to be ginormous strides towards success and they definitely shouldn’t be compared to others.
My goals are different than yours. In fact, my goals include snuggling with my babies while they still want to. They also include writing every day so that I can share my talents with others. Neither of these sound like they are really all that “Godly”, but I think they are because they are supporting my purpose as a mom and as a child of God.
In addition, keeping my actions in check because of the two boys I’m currently raising is something I can do TODAY in order to further God’s Kingdom and fulfill my purpose. Sounds small, but again, it’s another baby step towards the destination and my goal of raising Christian men.
The two greatest commandments are to love our God and to love our neighbor (see Mark 12:30-31). Don’t make them complicated. Don’t let the devil tell you that you can’t (insert whatever it is that speaks to you).
Most importantly, give today to God and then everything else will fall into place.
Some Wisdom for Today: Proverbs 8:17 – I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.
