Road Signs

When I’m traveling from Austin to Tennessee, I have to be really careful as I drive through Dallas because there is a huge chance I will miss my exit in one of the largest cities in the nation.  I’ve done it enough times to know what a pain in the neck it is to get back on track!!  Grrr.

It’s not like I haven’t made that trip a gazillion times, but this one certain road change gets me every time.  For some reason it sneaks up on me and on many occasions I flat out miss it.

Maybe I’m talking too much.  Maybe I’m not paying attention.  Maybe it’s too early or too late in the day.  Maybe I’m driving 90 to nothing!  The excuses are endless.

The fact remains…I screw up when I’m not reading the road signs or obeying the traffic laws.

Life can be exactly like my interstate exchange.  If we aren’t concentrating on the journey we are on…we might make a wrong turn and head in the opposite direction of our target.

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. Hebrews 2:1

It always amazes me how mad I get at myself for having missed my exit or when I get a speeding ticket.  Duh!  It’s pure carelessness and negligence and even worse…it’s my OWN FAULT.  There’s nothing worse than listening to someone whine about where they are in life when it was their choices that got them there….sigh.

More than likely, there have been several road signs leading up to the exits or speed zones we are supposed to adhere to.  However, are we watching out for them?  And more importantly, do we accept the right path and the speed in which to go for our lives?

Eek!  So many tough questions… and I thought it was just a lesson in driving carefully!

The point is that we are kidding ourselves if we think we never drive over the speed limit, run a yellow light or miss an exit.  The road signs are there, but we sometimes just don’t want to obey them.

Our defiance will not get us to our destination in a timely manner, nor will it get us there without a huge ticket, crash or worse…a deadly accident.

Paul gives us some great advice for the journey ahead in his writings to the Corinthians (1Corinthians 16:13-14)

  1. Be on your guard.

  2. Stand firm in the faith.

  3. Be men of courage.

  4. Be strong.

  5. Do everything in love.

Great advice for any road trip…especially with children!!

God doesn’t give us these road rules and regulations to make traveling a hardship; He creates parameters for our best interest and to help us live our best lives.

Are you watching the road signs?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 4:25 – Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.
