As I’ve watched it rain over the past weekend, I realized how much my words affect my mood. (And it hasn’t been good!!!!)
For example, I heard myself saying, “What a dreary day” or “This rain makes me tired” throughout the entire weekend and guess how I felt the most of the time???
Dreary and tired…go figure.
What I should have been doing was thanking God for the much needed rain that is filling our lakes and water reservoirs during one of the worst droughts on record in our area.
Additionally, I should have been asking God for safety and protection for those who live in low areas or traveling around low water crossings.
The bottom line is that I should have been more concerned with the welfare of others than feeling sorry for myself because the days were dreary and I feel tired…because the truth is that I have the luxury of laying around watching movies when many are wondering where their next meal is coming from. Sigh.
The words that come out of our mouth and the thoughts that roll around in our heads really do have a profound effect on our attitude and well-being. These words and thoughts speak volumes of where we will go from here.
If the words are negative and filled with destructive and damaging viewpoints then we can bet our biffy that we will head down a treacherous road. If our outlook is positive and hopeful, we are much more likely to travel on a joyful journey.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
How will we ever move forward to a better future if our self-talk leads us to believe we don’t deserve a joyful and hopeful existence?
We each have the choice to dwell on the negative things that surround us or to place our trust in God and having faith that NO MATTER WHAT COMES OUR WAY we can find the peace and joy of Jesus Christ because that has been promised to us if we choose to accept it His gift of eternal life.
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:5-6
Our best example for joy in the midst of crisis is Christ forgiving us as He died on the cross at the hand of man. Another good example is when Paul repeatedly was beaten and jailed during his ministry of spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, yet still found joy and hope in the midst of his trials.
I would dare say that if they voiced a pessimistic view of their situation, they would not have had the positive outcomes that they did. (Yes, I know they both died for their cause…but, I believe they both live in paradise today because of their faith that God has a greater plan than we can ever imagine.) And that is the best outcome I can even dream of!!!!
Reminding ourselves that this world is our temporary home can keep us centered on Godly living and Godly thinking. Plus, living a life steeped in gratitude is how we can positively affect our today and tomorrows.
We truly are what we think we are.
What are your thoughts??
Some Wisdom for Today: Proverbs 15:28 – The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.
