Making Music

This past Sunday the praise band at my local church ROCKED the house!

Not only were there some musicians who I absolutely adore playing that day, but every song they performed was spot on!  The notes blended, the piano soared, the guitar ripped it up and the drums beat to the rhythm of my soul. AHHH….could have listened to them all day.

I LOVE music.  It’s always been a huge part of my life and I not only enjoy being a part of a band, but I also appreciate listening to good music and singing along.

My husband, Lee, always laughs at me because I may not know the words to a tune, but I will sing anyway and make up my own harmony as I go along. Music just has a way of infiltrating my body and I’m defenseless to hold back my voice.

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. Psalms 104:33

Now, as we’ve all seen on American Idol, America’s Got Talent and The Voice, there can be good music and really, really bad music.  Oh goodness.  I cringe when I hear people destroy a beautiful melody.  And I’m always hoping it’s not ME!

Music isn’t just an outstanding voice or a fabulous guitar player…it’s much more.

A good song takes a group of people learning the melody and/or words, getting in tempo with each other and coming together in a perfect sequence of musical notes.  It takes planning, perfecting and performing.

Such is life.

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. James 5:13

When things fall into place and the path is easy, life hums along with a lilt of effortlessness and luxury that everyone wants to be a part of. Then tragedies, problems and mayhem occur and the tune plummets to a deafening banging on an unknown chord that sends people into a panicked scramble to shut up the noise.

The diversity of music is also very telling to the way of the world.  There is country music, hard rock, contemporary, classical, jazz, big band, rap, hip hop, Top 40, Christian, blues, alternative and much more.  Just because you don’t like one of the genres doesn’t mean it’s bad.  It’s. Just. Different.

Another thing that I find interesting about music is the way it can touch the soul with words, instrumentals, tempo and beat.  There is a plethora of ways to reach the human heart and music seems to score high every time.

Music surrounds us daily.  Sometimes it’s loud and clear and sometimes it’s drowned out by the noise of life.

Today is a perfect example because I woke up to birds singing and I walked outside this evening to the sound of our high school band practicing down the street.

Music is played on the radio, on television and in the movies.  Its power over our emotions is amazing because it can relax us, make us sad, get us to giggle, depress us, make us tense or upset us.

God has given us this exquisite gift to fill our hearts and express our feelings.  I am eternally grateful for all of His gifts, but this one has to be my favorite!

May we all sing His praises and glorify Him through one of his most wondrous gifts!!

What God-gift is your favorite?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 17:4 – An evildoer listens to wicked lips, and a liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.
