Honor

Ever since the Veteran’s Day celebration, I’ve really been thinking about honor.  What it means.  And how to actually DO it.

Clearly the first question is easily answered.  In fact, Webster’s Dictionary defines honor as high regard or respect (noun) and adherence to principles considered right (verb).

As always, it gets a little tricky when you get to the doing part.

I think it’s relatively simple to tell someone that you honor them.  However, what actions do we take to show them that we honor them?

It’s kind of like saying I’m a Christian and then NOT going to church to worship and praise, praying in order to develop a deeper relationship with God or spreading the love of Christ, in which we were asked to do.  Doesn’t sound like much doing….

According to www.wiki.answers.com, the word honor is found 145 times in the Bible and the word honorable is found 30 times.  Interestingly, it’s not all about honoring God either.

Here are a few honorable mentions (hee, hee):

  1. We are to honor each other:  Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Romans 12:9-11

  2. We are to honor our parents:  Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Ephesians 6:1-3

  3. We are to honor those in authority:  Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 1Timothy 5:17

  4. We are to honor ourselves:  Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. 1Corinthians 3:16-17

I don’t know about you, but life gets in my way.  It’s like there is a huge roadblock that looms over my path keeping me from doing what I should be doing.  Uh…think that is called sin!

The awesome truth is that God will take care of this characteristic flaw, wash my sins away and guide me down the road that leads to Him.  Woohoo!

Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. Hebrews 13:18

I love that God gives me a specific prayer in the scripture above that I will certainly be praying often since I want to live an honorable life honoring those who I am called to honor.

So, the first step to the doing part is prayer.  All the other ‘doings’ will follow!  Funny how that works!

Get to praying and see what happens!

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 3:35 –The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame.
