Hanging On

With the recent suicide of Linkin Park’s frontman, Chester Bennington, I can’t help but wonder how someone could become so driven to dispair that they thought death was better than life.

(In case you don’t know, Linkin Park is a band that has been popular for years in the pop-culture music industry.)

The reason why I have been so affected by this death is because their recent hit, Heavy, was very pertinent to my state of mind this past spring. The lyrics spoke to me in a way that made me feel not so alone and like someone else could understand my struggle with anxiety and panic. Little did I know how indicative these words were of events to come.

A few of the lyrics include:

I don’t like my mind right now

Stacking up problems that are so unnecessary

Wish that I could slow things down

I wanna let go but there’s comfort in the panic

And I drive myself crazy

Thinking everything’s about me

Yeah, I drive myself crazy

‘Cause I can’t escape the gravity

I’m holding on

Why is everything so heavy?

Holding on

So much more than I can carry

I keep dragging around what’s bringing me down

If I just let go, I’d be set free

The last line specifically hit the nail on the head for me because it reminded me that my life should be in God’s hands and not my own.

What I find so sad about this tragic event is that Chester never found the peace in life that can only come from Jesus Christ.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Even at my lowest, I knew that God was with me and would lead me through. I never doubted His Love and that He would provide a way for me to get better, move forward, and work through my darkest fears.

And yes, I am doing better. Christian counseling is the best thing I’ve ever done for my life!!!

Chester’s suicide just makes me realize how many people continue to reject the love and power of Jesus Christ. This suicide epidemic tells me that we as Christians still have so much work to do.

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4

Our example will speak louder than words and our actions will have more impact on others than any words could ever do. If we do use words they should always be loving, kind, empathetic, merciful and understanding.

There are so many of us who deal with many circumstances of pain in life. If we were more vocal about our struggles we really could help so many people.

Are you using your experiences to bring others closer to Christ?

Some Wisdom for Today: Proverbs 18:2 – A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.
