This time of year always makes me think about angels.
I don’t know if it is the fact that Mary, Joseph, shepherds and others had encounters with angels or if it has something to do with all of the singing that goes on around Christmastime that reminds me of these celestial beings.
Whatever it is, angels excite me and scare me…all at the same time.
I have never met an angel that I know of. But, I imagine if I did, I would probably be a raving lunatic and fall dead on the spot. (I really don’t do well with uncommon circumstances.)
The whole idea of angels being real brings to mind a plethora of major motion pictures with a number of sci-fi characters that seem completely unbelievable. However, I am confident I’m not completely a nut-case for believing angels to be true because…like I’ve said before, the Bible tells me so.
Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? Hebrews 1:14
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Psalms 91:11
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews 13:2
And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Matthew 24:31
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. Psalm 34:7
These are just a few verses that tell of the angels that God sends into our world to defend, protect and proclaim the word of God.
Isn’t that cool? Have you ever thought about angels? Have you ever wondered if they are in your life today working God’s Will so that you and I might be defended, protected or saved from something terrible?
This is just one more way that God shows His enormous and never-ending love for us. God has workers that are helping us through this life…even without our knowledge. WOW!
Maybe the guy on the street who looks like a bum is an angel. Maybe that woman on the train who smiles at you is an angel. Maybe the child who waves from a car window is an angel. Hmmmm….
It’s a little frightening (especially when I think of it with my feeble and unimaginative human brain), but when I look deeply into scripture, I find great comfort that God has blessed us with angels. In fact, God’s Word always seems to stamp out my fear and warm my heart instead.
Above all, the birth of Jesus and all the encounters with angels surrounding God’s awesome gift to us and the world brings great joy, peace and hope. And again, I am reminded of how loved we are by our amazing God.
Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents. Luke 15:10
So, the next time you feel the whisper of the wind, see a man on the street or a child wave; say a little ‘thank you’ for God’s continued work in your life. You never know who he has sent to keep you safe.
Some Wisdom for Today: Proverbs 10:12 – Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.
