“I know what love is, Jenny.” – Forrest Gump
If someone as simple as Forrest Gump knows what love is – why do most of us have such a hard time with it?
We seem to think we know all about love, but when the going gets rough…we get going (down a different path that looks a little better). I’m pretty sure this is not what true love is. Especially if I compare my ability to love against the Almighty Father’s capacity to truly LOVE. His love is pure and unending. (Hmmm…my love doesn’t look like that. Sigh.)
God’s love has endured the test of time. He loves us even when we don’t love Him. And He has given us the freedom to choose Him or to live this life our way.
Sadly, I tend to want to live life my way more than His. I find myself fighting against obedience and love because the misery of this world loves my company!! The way of the world is bright and shiny and looks like a lot of fun. And I love fun! But, it’s a scam.
If I’m completely honest, I must admit that I really don’t have a clue about love. My love tends to be on the shallow side where it’s based on my mood, ease of use, and what’s in it for me. Sure, I love my family, friends, house, car, and the beach, but do I really LOVE?
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1Corinthians 13:4-7
Unfortunately, the above scripture solidifies my resolve that I’m clueless about what love is. I lose my patience often, I’m easily angered, I’m definitely self-seeking, I can be quite proud, I even lie sometimes (gasp) and I most certainly keep a record of what people have done to me!!! I fail miserably and God knows it.
BUT wait!!! God still loves me!!!! That is the great news in a world full of bad news.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
Amazing, isn’t it? The same God who made the universe and everything in it is in love with you and me! He knows we are a work in progress. However, He helps us learn to love by learning about His love.
Jesus Christ is the key that unlocks a door to living a life with love. I think it’s a perfect reminder on a day when we celebrate love!
Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope you feel God’s love and choose Him today!
What are you doing to make today extra special? I would love to hear what you have planned.
Some Wisdom for Today: Proverbs 31:30 – Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
