Underdogs

iphone pics 127As many of you know, I have a continuing love affair with football.  So, you can imagine how happy I am these days with college and NFL playing almost every day of the week.  I am very thankful for the new programming that spreads the games throughout the week.  TOUCHDOWN!

However, football happens to be one of those sports where there is normally an underdog somewhere in the pack and it really stinks if it’s your team (yes, I know I’m not really on the team, but I would be if they knew what was good for them)!

Chicago is my team.  I love them and root for them win or lose, but I’m also one of those fans that gets my heart stomped on mid-season to only end up near tears at the end.

The truth is that the Chicago Bears is often the team that breaks their fans’ hearts by starting off each season with wins only to stumble and crash by the end.  So, yes, I would consider the Bears a HUGE underdog in most cases and I am diligently praying that it is not the case THIS YEAR.

Although they may injure me (okay, not really) most seasons, I continue to put on my team jerseys and yell at the top of my lungs for them during each game.

It kind of reminds me of my relationship with God because I am definitely the underdog in this case.

For example, many days I start out strong with scripture reading and prayer in the morning…only to fall off the ‘Christ-like’ wagon when something goes awry.  SQUIRREL!

It usually doesn’t take much for Satan to weasel his way into my life, heart and actions.  It takes one moment of weakness on my part to sabotage the rest of my day.  Sigh.

However, if I consider the football analogy for a moment, I would realize that God is rooting for me anyway…even when I am losing.  Whew!

God knows who wins the game at the end of the day.  He knows how hard the players are playing.  And since He’s the best coach in the world, He understands how to pick the players up from defeat and place them back on the field.  I’M POSITIVE THAT GOD LOVES FOOTBALL, TOO!!!! (Well, at least in my world!)

Life gets in the way.  We get in the way.  But, God is always there to LEAD the way.  We just have to shake the dust off and get back in the game.

Too often, we give up before the game is even over because we’ve convinced ourselves that we aren’t a valuable enough player.  God doesn’t believe this for a second and neither should you!

We are ALL God’s children and He wants every single soul on His side.  And just because we have sat on the bench or have gotten a penalty does NOT mean we are out of the game.  That’s just part of it!

My pastor said it best on Sunday that successful people have usually failed 9 out of 10 times, but the reason they are successful is because THEY KEPT ON TRYING.

The game is not over people!  Don’t look at the scoreboard, God sure isn’t!  BUT, keep playing and keep trying.  You never know when you are going to make the play that wins the game!

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 6:16-19 – There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

Here is a good verse for the Underdog: Psalms 73:26 “My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.”
