Big Goals

camera first day 082How in the world will we ever realize our dreams if we don’t know what it is we are supposed to be doing or worse…we don’t DO it?

The short answer is that we won’t reach any goal worth having without guidance, structure and action.

Year after year many of us find ourselves in January with big dreams, big ideas and big plans.  The problem is that if we never write them down, hammer down a path to get them done and take the action necessary to accomplish them…they will NEVER happen!!

Eventually, these BIG goals dissipate into everyday living and cease to exist because life just gets in the way.  Yikes!

This is the story of my life.  Sigh.

The truth is that I’m a dreamer with absolutely no idea on how to make those dreams come true.  I am a seeker who is trying out new things to figure out what will stick.

Sure, I have moments of genius (I figure most of us do once in a while), but these “moments” are few and far between with little action towards the BIG goal occurring in the meantime.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  Matthew 6:33

All too often, I find myself thinking of the next big goal instead of working on the ones I’ve already named.  Then I wonder where my day goes and why I’m not any closer to making that BIG dream a reality.  Well, duh!!

The struggle is based on fear.

  1. The fear of failure.
  2. The fear of being overwhelmed.
  3. The fear of the dream being the wrong one in the first place.
  4. The fear of change.
  5. The fear of not being good enough.

The list goes on and on and on.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2Corinthians 12:9-10

Fear paralyzes us to the point where we do nothing at all because we are so afraid of an outcome other than the one we want.

But, what if we took baby steps towards that big goal and found ourselves in a better place than what we had hoped for?  What if the journey has some bumps in the road, but those bumps create a completely different dream or success?  What if our actions made our dreams come true?

It’s these “what if’s” that keep me on the road to discovery.

This year is a perfect example because I did something I’ve wanted to do for quite some time – get a full time job – and even though it didn’t work out exactly like I had hoped, it is still one of my great accomplishments for 2015 because I’ve learned so much from it!  (Plus, I made some fabulous new friends!!!)

Success and failure are not destinations!!!  They are blips on the radar of life.  They are either a pat on the back or a lesson learned, but neither defines who we are.

I loved the following quote I saw on Facebook:

“If you FAIL, never give up because F.A.I.L. means First Attempt In Learning.  END is not the end, in fact, E.N.D. means Effort Never Dies.  If you get no as an answer remember N.O. means Next Opportunity.  So let’s be positive.”

As with every other year, I will once again sit down at the beginning of 2016 to write my goals and objectives for this year.  I will post them where I can see them daily and I will do my best to accomplish them.

And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.”  Habakkuk 2:2

But most of all, I will take action – even if they are baby steps – towards the BIG goals in my life because they are worth trying in my book regardless of the outcome!!

What BIG goal do you have?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 16:3 – Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.
