Blooming Where We Are Planted

The boys and Grandmother Jan in the backseat

The boys and Grandmother Jan in the backseat – 2011

This past week has been quite the doosy!  My husband and I met with the Flu and it liked us so much it decided to stay a while!!!  YIKES!

All in all, I feel fortunate that Lee and I were the only ones to suffer the bad bug in our house full of two boys and a grandmother.

I am also very thankful for a VERY capable grandmother who got the boys to school, gymnastics, basketball, did homework, washed clothes, and prepared meals for us all.  WHEW! I’m tired just thinking of all the many things she did in that one week!

I guess you could say she bloomed where she was planted!

Moreover, Grandmother Jan took a bad situation and made it into a learning experience for us all because she didn’t complain ONE BIT – AND she made PUDDING!!!  Woohoo!  If I hadn’t been so sick, I would have really enjoyed that pudding!!!

Grandmother Jan became a rock star, whereas I…, well, I complained a bit more than most!

The truth is I am not a good sick person.  I am whiney, achey, angry, complainy and downright depressed.  I, unlike Grandmother Jan, do not bloom very well where I am planted.

In fact, I struggle, complain and let everyone know around me how miserable I am.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. Isaiah 53:7

Uh oh…I think I’ve got some explaining to do!

Obviously, my behavior does not reflect that of the Messiah of whom they are talking about in Isaiah.  Sadly, this is just one of the many transgressions I am so good at on a regular basis.

The problem remains that it is very easy to live life thankfully and gratefully when things are going our way.  But, it is NOT easy when we are suffering from illness, divorce, financial troubles, bratty kids or any other situation that may or may not be in our control.

However, as Grandmother Jan demonstrated – we CAN take a miserable circumstance and make the best of it.  (I’m not kidding…my kids probably wish I’d go back to bed so that Grandmother Jan would continue to make her yummy concoctions, watch movies and go to Chick-fil-A!!!!)

So, even though 2015 has had a rough start, I’m placing on my resolutions’ list to be a light in a dark world REGARDLESS OF MY SITUATION.

Do all things without grumbling or questioning…. Philippians 2:14

Our attitudes about whatever situation we find ourselves in can be positive or negative.  Which are you going to choose?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 17:22 – A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
