The Sabbath

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8-11

How often do you think about the Sabbath?  Me? Not much.  In fact, when I looked at the blog calendar this morning I almost changed the topic because…

  1. I don’t know much about the Sabbath.
  2. I don’t think I really comply with the Sabbath commandment (see above scripture).
  3. I don’t really know what the Sabbath should mean to me.

These are all fantastic reasons for moving on to another subject because clearly I know nothing about this one.

The problem is that I get the feeling that God placed this matter on my blog calendar and on my heart, so it’s only going to keep bugging me until I DO something about it!  Gotta love how God works in our lives!!

As I’ve been reading all the information I can find about the Sabbath on Google, I’m discovering that I am NOT alone when it comes to my many questions about what a Sabbath is and what it should mean to me.

One thing is for certain, lots of people have lots of opinions on this subject.

Since I’m pretty clueless, I’m going to be praying about it in the coming days and see where the Holy Spirit leads me.  I am hoping that with my persistent request to understand, God will show me what to do.

In the meantime, I think it will help to remember the following:

One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike.  Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.  He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord.  He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.  Romans 14:5-6

If I think of the Sabbath as another rule to follow – I get in a heap of trouble.  It’s when I realize it as a gift from God that I really start to understand what He meant.

And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:27

As with every day in life, we should deliberately submit to the Will of God so that we are living our purpose and not just wasting time.

The Sabbath is no different.

We would be doing ourselves a HUGE favor if we took one day a week and rested (this is the Hebrew meaning of Sabbath – according to Google!) because most of us stay in a continued state of overwhelming panic due to the high demands and pressures of life.

God wants SO MUCH MORE FOR US.  He wants our entire being, much less every day, to glorify Him and live as He intended.

Resting our bodies and minds once a week and opening ourselves to God’s therapy on that day would probably amaze us.  Not only would we get more done the other six days, we would probably be more refreshed then ever and feel better, too.

I have to say that I’ve always been impressed with Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby for being closed on Sundays because of their owners’ Christian beliefs.

I wonder what would happen if I intentionally took a Sabbath once a week?  Hmmm…I see an experiment in my future!  Will let you know what happens!

I encourage you to pray about what the Sabbath should mean to you.

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 11:24 – One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.

Something to think about. I play catch up with work on Sunday, but do not seem to get caught up. I may be better off not working and watching the Cowboys and Bears lose.
