The BIG Questions

by | Jul 30, 2013 | Uncategorized | 2 comments

“Where did God come from?” asked my sweet, eight-year-old Jake this past Sunday morning.

Duh.

Okay, now let’s be clear.  I read scripture, I write devotionals, but I am in NO way a theologian or some Biblical scholar.  Therefore, my answer was, “I haven’t a clue, but we can ask Him when we die.”

Jake was good with that.  Thank you, God.

Of course, what then happened was that I started to wonder (in my head) where God came from.  Who made Him? How did He come into existence?  And why He actually made humans?

Many more questions flew through my head as I pondered the questions surrounding the universe.  It was frightening, confusing and more than just a little disconcerting.

Then I felt the peace that transcends all human understanding as I remembered His Word.

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:20

Actually, all I have to do is look up into the sky to realize that our world was not an accident.  It was a loving, planned work of art created by an amazing power.

Not everyone is so convinced and that is ok.  They will have to come to this realization in their own time, but I am blessed to have a faith that abounds in my heart and settles the anxiety of my mind.

It is my faith that assures me that I am not alone and that I am loved.  I don’t have a lick of proof and I am hands down the worst debater in the world.  BUT, I am secure in the fact that I have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit that leads me daily.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26

I can tell you for a fact that I have not always been this confident in my faith.  So, when I asked my dad what to do, he said to pray this prayer.

Dear God, please help me grow closer to you and give me your wisdom.

These words changed my life.

And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. Luke 11:9

We all have questions.  And it’s okay if we don’t have the answers.  However, I feel like faith is a little like my exercise routine…if I don’t actually work out, I’m not going to lose weight or gain muscle.  But, if I exercise daily and eat in moderation, I eventually will see changes.

My faith is the same way.  I have to work on it daily by reading scripture and bring my questions to God in prayer in order to find the peace I need to live in such a chaotic world.  Most importantly, I love that when I do exercise my faith, I don’t live in such fear.

Satan wants us to give up hope and believe this world is the end all be all.  It’s NOT.

We have a God who loves us and a Savior who stands in our place so that we may know our Heavenly Father forever.

I may not be the smartest because I can’t answer the BIG questions, but I sure am feeling pretty blessed because of the gift of faith!  Have you asked for yours?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 30:4 – Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know!

That is a good illustration on Faith being like a workout. In every church, you will find those with Atrophy of their Faith due to the fact that they do not delve into the Word on a regular basis, if at all. 1 Timothy 4:15 “Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.” I truly pity those that miss out. Studies show that, on average, Americans spend 4 hours a night in front of the TV. The most common excuse for not studying the Word is “No Time”. What does it say about people’s priorities when they fit into that box? We all can use a regular Faith workout as it truly does make you stronger.

    Great post!
