A Sack of Potatoes

bag-of-potatoesRaw potatoes are not my favorite.  For one, they always seem dirty and rough.  And for two, if I forget about them and leave them in the pantry (which is VERY likely in my disorganized kitchen), they become squishy with those roots coming out at all ends. YUCK.

On the other hand, potatoes are quite yummy when you peel, chop and fry them up! Oh, and don’t forget the good ole’ mashed potatoes laced with butter, sour cream, salt and bacon.

Holy moly…I’m making myself hungry!

Now, what if we were the sack of potatoes?  Wouldn’t we be better after we were peeled, chopped, fried or mashed?  Hmmm.

I doubt any of us are jumping to the front of the line to be hacked apart just to taste delicious.  But, it makes sense that none of us are doing any good sitting in a dark pantry getting squishy, either.

More to the point, even the best of intentions will get us nowhere if we sit around like a sack of potatoes.

I can talk the talk all day long, but if I don’t walk the walk I will stay in the same place, with the same story, with the same ending.

Of course, if I take a chance, try something new or just ‘DO’ something, I could very well end up with failure.  Yet, I will never succeed if I don’t take the first step.

  • For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Hebrews 6:10-12 (bold & italics mine)

We are called to act!!  And with all this action there will no doubt be some hardships, pain and disappointment.  Just like the sack of potatoes, we could be chopped, fried or smashed at any time…however, if we are doing God’s Will, the rewards will be GREAT!

The problem is that most of us want the easy way.  We want life to work out to our expectations, in our timing and with our best interests at the top of the list.

Rarely do we seek to help someone else without first considering the benefits to ourselves.  What a sad truth.

Stop the madness!  Make a change today!  Get off your rear and make a difference in some else’s life because GOD wants you to (not to write it off on your taxes or to make yourself feel better).

  • So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? Luke 16:11

It’s like a test.  We are given some time and some gifts and God is watching to see what we do with both.

Are you stinking up the pantry or are you taking a step towards doing SOMETHING?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 21:5 – The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.
