Decorated

My mom-in-law has a dear friend at church who says when she’s all dressed up that she is ‘decorated’.  I absolutely LOVE this adage because it rings true of how I feel every time I walk out the door to church, a meeting or on a date with Lee.

As the typical girl, I spend an awful amount of time picking out clothes, deciding on jewelry, adding the right pair of shoes, teasing my hair, applying loads of make-up and dousing myself with perfume.

Sounds like a cover-up!!  But, what am I disguising?  The real me?  Flat-haired, blemished, and stinky me?

Don’t get me wrong; I immensely enjoy getting dolled-up.  There’s just something to be said about feeling fresh, groomed and smelling yummy!  I’m definitely ALL girl!!!

Yet, I can’t help but wonder what I’m trying to hide or cover up with all of these decorations.  Well, these days I’m concealing highways of wrinkles with makeup and rolls and craters with my clothes!  Where did these come from?  I promise!!  These signs of aging WERE NOT there before!

In addition to wondering why I’m spending all this time decorating myself, I have to question how I respond to others who don’t ‘decorate’ themselves.  Am I just as inviting to them as to someone who looks like a million bucks?  Hmmm.  Good question.

I believe that it is absolutely fine to ‘decorate’ yourself if it makes you feel good, but I also think God wants us to be REAL.

What does this mean?

  • Decorate yourself with the fear of the Lord.

Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments! Psalm 112:1

  • Decorate yourself with honesty.

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32

  •  Decorate yourself with love for others.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32

  •  Decorate yourself with good works.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

There is no reason to hide behind a decoration!  God already knows and sees everything!  In fact, we don’t ever fool Him…just ourselves.

So, the next time you ‘decorate’ yourself before walking out the front door; don’t forget to put on God’s love.  That is the best decoration of ALL!

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 31:30 – Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

I am glad to be a guy! Our “dolling-up” ritual is so much simpler. I like your last statement to “don’t forget to put on God’s Love.” It is so easy to forget to let it shine through if you are struggling with a bad morning or something else in life, but it is always there within you. I would also like to suggest one last Decoration to your list: “Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”

Did you ever see the one on sisters? It’s from September 13th post. Whenever you are feeling down, read that and know how much you are loved!!!

Yes, it’s Romans 13:14 – Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature. Thanks for reminding me of that one!!! Such a good one!!!! Love you!!!
