Sleeping with the Enemy

ID-100138380Don’t know if you have seen the Julia Roberts’ movie Sleeping with the Enemy from 1991, but if you haven’t…you gotta see it!  It’s scary, psychotic, thrilling and freeing.  One of my all-time favorites and it makes you feel better when the bad guy gets taken down in the end!!

Everyone likes a happy ending.

The problem is that many of ‘sleep’ with the enemy on a regular basis.  Not literally, but by keeping too close to the edge of disaster.

We seem to think that if we flirt with sin, it will never catch us.  WRONG.

My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey,    and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it. Proverbs 5:1-5

Sin looks awesome.  It usually resembles something fun, exciting, adventurous, intriguing, dangerous and down-right wicked.  (I love saying the word ‘wicked’…I wish it meant something good!)

Even more, we are drawn to sin like a bear to honey because it entices us with its attractiveness, luxury and splendor.  We were born into sin, so it’s no shocker that we are enthralled with its allure.

I don’t think anyone would argue that it’s easy to sin.  Then comes the rationalizing….

For example:

  1. We exaggerate our story to make ourselves look good.
  2. We flirt with someone because they make us feel good about ourselves.
  3. We lie to stay out of trouble.
  4. We steal because we deserve what others have.
  5. We hate because we are jealous.
  6. We are jealous because we are unhappy with ourselves.
  7. We become the victim to receive pity from others.
  8. We become gluttonous because we lack self-discipline.
  9. We don’t want to be self-disciplined because it hurts too much.
  10.  And the list goes on and on….

Snuggling up to sin is a good way to start sinning.  Trust me.  We aren’t strong enough to turn away if we are already dancing with the devil…HELLO…he’s GORGEOUS!!!

I’ve danced my share and I can get sucked into the sin faster than speeding bullet.  Sigh.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10

The good news is that God has given us tools to stay out of the heavenly dog house!!!  He’s provided us with a Son who not only died to take our place, but who taught us how to live while he was here.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

Do you dance with the devil or do you leave the ballroom completely?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 23:17-18 – Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
