Relying on God

088Have you ever noticed how everything always works itself out?

For example, that final exam in Calculus when you were a sophomore in college that you fretted about for the entire semester…do you even know what you scored?  Probably not.

Or what about that appraisal that came in too high for the house you were selling and you were afraid the buyers would walk, but instead there was a compromise and the home closed and you’ve moved on.  What were you going to spend that $1500 on?  You probably can’t remember.

The truth is that daily we are faced with situations, circumstances and problems that cause us to get anxious and worry about the future.  No one lives a life on Easy Street.  We all encounter the valleys of life, but the Bible tells us not to worry.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6

What does God know that we don’t?  Well…everything.

So, if God is telling us not to be anxious about anything then WHY ARE WE WORRIED ON A REGULAR BASIS?  Absolutely makes no sense, but I’m not sure I know anyone who doesn’t get in a tizzy every once in a while.

SIDE NOTE:  If you don’t ever worry, please contact me because I’d like to know your secret!!

As humans we are flawed and arrogant enough to think we are in control.  We think we know what is best for our lives and we want what we want, when we want it and how we want it done.

Often I hear people (and myself) telling God how we would like Him to fix a situation.  We inform God how we think He should do things and what would be best for us.  We disclose our very well thought out plans for our success and victory and encourage God to listen and conform to OUR PLAN.  We frequently tell God what to do.  YIKES!

This is a serious mistake.

Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord. Jeremiah 23:24

God made each and every one of us for a purpose.  God created us to worship, serve and glorify HIM all of the days of our lives.  However, we mess it up on a regular basis and need discipline, correction and lessons to get us back in line with what God has planned…not what we have planned.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

Instead of contemplating all the things that are wrong in our lives or why we aren’t where we think we should be, maybe we should step back and rely on God to lead us.  What a nifty thought!!

Throughout the Bible God has made it perfectly clear that we will meet challenges in our life, but He also gives us MANY tools to get through each trial without worry.

This sounds like I’m selling something that isn’t true, but the best part is that IT IS the TRUTH!

God gives us the following to guide our every step:

  1. The Holy Spirit is our ‘helper’ and is always with us.
  2. Scripture is His living Word that encourages us, guides us and leads us through life.
  3. Prayer is direct communication with God for us to tell Him everything and a way to listen to His guidance.

Relying on God takes practice and constant repetition.  We won’t be perfect, but we will be more joyful, peaceful, loving and hopeful.

Zig Ziglar’s quote defines exactly what I’m talking about, “People often say that motivation doesn’t last.  Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 15:3 – The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.
