Prosperity

385Saturday night I fell asleep during one of the most boring movies I have recently seen.  I feel terrible that I couldn’t get into The Book of Eli, but it just wasn’t in the cards for me.  As usual, I received the Cliff Notes version from Lee the next morning and I was disappointed that I didn’t stay awake long enough to finish the film.

If you haven’t seen the movie, it’s basically about a man who travels for 30+ years to take ‘the book’ to where God wants it to go.  I didn’t know it was the Bible…guess I was already dozing!

Anyway, before I fell fast into Meg-dreamland, I heard something that struck a chord.  Denzel Washington’s character said something about how people in the olden days (referring to our today) where so prosperous that they threw away things that the people were now shedding blood over.

For some reason this stuck in my head.  I have since mulled over the fact that we live in a time of prosperity, excess, and abundant waste.

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Ephesians 15:15-17

Unfortunately, I decided that it’s not just material things that I waste, but it’s my time and opportunities, as well.  ARGH!!!

Do not misunderstand.  Prosperity is not a bad thing.  However, if I’m not using my gifts, talents, time and money for the greater good and God’s Kingdom…then I’m NOT doing as God would want me to.

Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. Ezekiel 16:49

Think about it.  Where does your STUFF come from?  God.  Who gave you the mind, body, and spirit to work and supply yourself with your STUFF?  God.  Who keeps you safe from danger and rescues you in your time of need?  God.

If everything IS God’s already, doesn’t it just make sense to find out what He wants us to do with the STUFF He provides?

In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him. Ecclesiastes 7:14

(Spoiler Alert for Book of Eli) – The best part of the movie from the Cliff Notes version I got from Lee is that the Bible was stolen from Denzel’s character, but he wasn’t concerned.  Do you know why?  Because he had read it so much that it was a PART OF HIM.

Oh…how I hope of being that close to my God and His Word that it becomes a PART OF ME!! And, even without His Book, I pray that I can have it written on my heart!!!

What a beautiful concept!!!

So, what can you do with your gifts, talents, time and money for God’s Kingdom?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 28:25 – A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the Lord will be enriched.
