Encourage Each Other

126One of my dearest friends has been through the wringer over the past month and it’s been absolutely heartbreaking to watch.  The poor thing has had problem after problem and she just can’t seem to catch a break (insert sad face and hear my boo’s)!

Needless to say, it was not by ‘coincidence’ that I read the Hebrews verse below in a recent devotional I often peruse.

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. Hebrews 3:13

“Hardened by sin’s deceitfulness” – WOW!  Talk about getting to the point!  But, that is exactly what happens when we allow our circumstances to shadow God’s love, mercy and grace.

Undoubtedly, God wants us to live freely and joyfully through the redemption of Christ no matter what our situation happens to be.

But the devil wants us to worry, fear, doubt and get discouraged because that leads us away from our Protector and Deliverer – AKA…GOD.

This is a battle that has been going on for ages, but we have a weapon that can hinder the devil’s scheme!  It’s called ENCOURAGEMENT!

Yes, there are tools such as prayer and scriptures, fasting and deprivation.  However, the encouragement of another can be a tangible gift to someone in the lowest of lows!

Sadly, we don’t usually take the time to hand out a hug, write that sweet text, drop off a little happy on the door step or make that phone call that is going to be an hour long because we’ve got stuff to do, places to go and people to see.

Yet, we have the power in OUR hands to keep our friends and family from becoming ‘hardened by sin’s deceitfulness’ by taking a moment to encourage them.  Again, WOW!  That is some real power!

The problem is that instead of encouraging, we find ourselves spewing our wisdom, jumping into the fray, adding fuel to their fire or gossiping unapologetically.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesian 4:9

We’ve got to do better and we’ve got to do better TOGETHER.

We were not made to live life alone as is clear in Genesis 2:18, “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone.  I will make a helper suitable for him.’”  In fact, God lives in community with the Holy Trinity that includes God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, it makes perfect sense (well, to me) that we should be an ever-present encourager to those people around us.

Think about it…

  1. Family needs us.
  2. Friends need us.
  3. Our churches need us.
  4. Our communities need us.
  5. The world needs us.

Are you doing your part?

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4

Thanks, Meg…way to make it personal!!!

This is a question we need to ask ourselves on a regular basis.  If we aren’t encouraging those around us than what good are we truly doing?

I hope you will take a moment and encourage someone TODAY!!!

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 19:17 – Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.
