Risky Business

photo(7)I only caught the tail-end of Elon Musk’s interview on Sunday night’s 60 Minutes, but it made quite the impression on me.  As a matter of fact, I haven’t been able to think about much else.

In case you have no idea who the heck Elon Musk is (no worries, I was clueless, too), let me give you a little background.

Elon Musk, born in 1971, is the guy who invented PayPal – you know that thing you use when you buy on Ebay or don’t want to use a credit card on every other web site known to man, so you use Paypal which then takes payment directly out of your bank account?!?!  Anyway, Elon sold PayPal and made $160-$180 MILLION.  He then put all of his earnings into SpaceX and Tesla Motors, both of which are now very successful companies.

What made his story interesting was that when he sold PayPal, he didn’t just sit around living on Easy Street.  He took his money and tried something else.  Remarkably, by 2008 he was in debt up to his ears and had basically lost every penny of the original millions.  Can you imagine?  YIKES!

But, he didn’t quit.

Indeed, Elon kept working and he persevered through what he called the worst year of his life. (Ya think?)  His hard work paid off and he is once again worth millions due to the success of his companies.

His life journey thus far made me wonder:

  1. How many of us would have jumped onto Easy Street if we had the same opportunity Elon was faced with?
  2. How many of us refuse to take risks because we fear failure?
  3. What would happen if we actually trusted God and followed His lead?

Hmmm….

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4

Now, I have no idea whether Elon has a personal relationship with Christ, but I do know that he has taken great risks and he has had great failures and great successes.

The reality is that Elon has taken fear out of the equation!

Daily we are faced with choices.  Are we going to live on Easy Street, Safe Street or FAITH STREET?

And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:22-24

I don’t know about you, but I want to live a purposeful, fulfilling and meaningful life.  The only way I can achieve this is by seeking God daily to find out what His plan is for my life.  Plus, taking my selfish desires out of the mix leaves God the opportunity to work through me and therefore accomplish His Will and His Plan.

The byproduct of my obedience is then a life of purpose, fulfillment and meaning!!

Are you ready to take part in God’s risky business?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 29:25 – The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
